The Biomedical Science class has finally come to the conclusion of who, or even what killed the late Anna Garcia, the body that was found the third day of school in the Biomedical classroom.
After the toxicology report came back normal, it was time to look further into one of the body systems. This led Mrs. Shriver’s class to look at the circulatory system with special focus on the heart.
To become familiar with the heart, students dissected sheep hearts, which are very similar to human hearts. Within the dissection labs, students cut, labeled, and examined the different parts of the heart.
After observing the characteristics of healthy sheep hearts, students explored a variety of different diseased sheep hearts and were challenged to figure out what was wrong with each of them.
Following a long investigation, students were led to believe Anna had a previously unknown heart condition, most likely a ventricular septal defect. The “hole” in her heart from the condition caused a myocardial infarction (heart attack). The heart attack then caused Anna to fall and hit her head on a nearby lab table.
