Mrs. Dearth makes Comicon costumes for herself and her family. Pieces she’s made for herself include: Kaylee from Firefly, Agent Carter, Tina Goldstein from Fantastic Beasts, Counselor Troi from StarTrek, Jemma from Agents of Shield, and April Ludgate (as Janet) from Parks and Rec. She also helped her husband build Mandalorian Armor and has turned her family into several Harry Potter and Marvel Characters, a Niffler, Grogu, Goofy, the cast of the PAW Patrol, and Ghost Spider. She says one of her family’s favorite things is going to Comicon.
Along with making costumes, she also likes to paint and repurpose objects like broken instruments. She also enjoys doing paper crafts with old sheet music and hymnals, and make vinyl designs on her Cricut machine. Her mom was a serious crafter and they have been doing crafts together as long as she can remember.
Mrs. Dearth played French Horn for band and orchestra and trumpet for jazz band. She was first chair for High School All-State on horn for 2 years in West Virginia.
She also participated in drama club, doing both stage crew and acting in theater. Her favorite role was “Miss Watson” in the musical “BIG”, because she got to dance on a desk with wheels during her solo. As stage crew, she loved doing costuming.
Mrs. Dearth knew she wanted to be a teacher when she was a kid playing with her dolls, but didn’t choose teaching music until 6th grade. She decided on teaching music because her grandfather was a band director and she says music is what made her happiest during the school day.
Out of everyone in history she would choose to meet Angela Lansbury because she believes that she was an outstanding actress who acted in a huge range of work. She’s the reason Mrs. Dearth fell in love with mysteries, specifically Murder, She Wrote. She also says Lansbury was an incredibly classy woman, yet still had the ability to play dark characters. Mrs. Dearth wants to meet her to talk about the work she did and how she was able to develop such skills.
If time travel was possible, Mrs. Dearth would choose to go to the early 1900s to hang out with Agatha Christie. Her books are Mrs. Dearth’s favorites and she loves how Christie paints the picture of that specific time period. Agatha’s life had several puzzling elements and she says it would have been fun to go back in time to solve one of those with Agatha.
Mrs. Dearth goes on “explores” with her kids. To her an explore is where they leave the house and let her kids bike or walk wherever they want and stop to look at whatever they want to explore until they’re too tired and go home. She usually goes home with a collection of rocks and sticks. She says they do this more often at their house but also on vacation like Malabar or Mohican.
One of her dream vacations would be going to the British Isles because her family is originally from England. She would also love to visit Scotland and Ireland based on pictures and books she’s read.
Mrs. Dearth’s first year of teaching she had a cat sneak in her classroom. She had a basement level room and windows with no screens, the cat and students had freaked out. She’s been teaching for 11 years at Fredericktown and 18 years total. A piece of advice Mrs. Dearth would give new teachers or students is to surround yourself with people who know more than you do and love what they do in life, and ask them questions constantly.
