The photosynthesis relay was a highlight in Biology. Competition was not only within the class but also between classes. These nine won overall: Bella Ritchie, Addie Keener, Hope Gibson, Ruthi Walsh, Leah Humphrey, Hoku Logan, Jenna Aurand, Chris Cleland, Landon Hoover-Knuckles.
In this lab the classes had to show the process of photosynthesis. They separated into two groups and raced to see who could get the fastest time.
Groups separated into five different stations: Splitting water, carrying hydrogens from the Light-Dependent Reaction (ETC) to the Light-Independent Reaction(Calvin Cycle), passing solar energy down the ETC, end of ETC filling up the ATP and NADPH, and assembling glucose in the Calvin Cycle.
The person in charge of splitting water had to take the hydrogens off (the pieces of paper clipped onto the molecule) and hand them to the carriers.
The carriers then brought the hydrogen to where the Calvin Cycle was being assembled.
People standing in line passed the cup of sunlight (water) down to the person filling up the ATP and NADPH cups, carriers of energy.
When the cups were full, students could begin assembling the cycle.
