Going to concerts and baseball games are two of Ms. Rivas’s hobbies as well as, spending time with family, cooking, and baking. During the summertime she loves to sleep in, go for walks, and travel to new cities.
One of Ms.Rivas’s hidden skills is smoking BBQ meat, like brisket and ribs. At her old school she got 1st place in a Chili-Cook Off and won best tasting brisket and ribs. As a prize for winning the Chili-Cook Off Ms. Rivas won a golden spoon. She participated in a family cook off and won a hat in the shape of a giant chili pepper.
If Ms. Rivas had the choice to travel anywhere, she would go to Scotland, specifically Edinburgh and the Highlands. She’s interested in visiting Scotland because she double majored in History & Political Science and has almost completed her Master’s Degree in history. Ms. Rivas would also love to visit because of it’s rich history and the old buildings/castles.
In the event that superpowers were real Ms. Rivas would love to have the power of teleportation so she could travel anywhere and then go home to sleep in her bed.
The artistic history of Paris has always intrigued Ms. Rivas . If she could time travel, Paris would be her destination. She would also love to see the Lost Generation of the 1920s.
When given the option to meet anyone in the world, alive or dead, Ms. Rivas chose Nikola Tesla. She wants to let him know how hard he worked and that he did a great job. She loves her electric car! She also warned people not to listen to Thomas Edison who’s just a “big ole meanie.”
Ms. Rivas decided she was going to be a teacher when she was 8 years old. While attending the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, she learned to love history and wanted others to share that feeling. Her government experience started when she was the parliamentarian of the university’s Student Senate.
If teaching didn’t work, out Ms. Rivas would be working at her undergrad university in admissions and/or academic counseling.
A favorite teaching moments was when Ms. Rivas briefly taught 8th grade science. For a project, her students had to record a news broadcast that included local weather and a major geological event. She says the project was fun and how she was happy to see the kids engaged and proud of their work.
Advice from Ms. Rivas for new teachers and students is this: “It’s not the end of the world. Nothing ever is. Life will go on so give yourself some grace and start anew after a good night’s sleep.”
