Cyndi Sockman has been teaching for ten years in total and is in her second year teaching math at Fredericktown. Her first career was engineering.
When Mrs. Sockman was a kid, she always played teacher with her stuffed animals, but didn’t consider teaching until she was 30. Once she started teaching, she knew it was the job for her.
Mrs. Sockman is a world traveler compared to most Freddies and has traveled to many areas: Blaize, Cancun, Canada, Jamaica, Finland, Germany, Paris, and Spain. There’s not one place in the world she’d settle because she loves to travel.
To go with her love of travel, Mrs. Sockman wants the superpower of omnilingualism. Then she could have a conversation with everyone. Some languages she’s really interested in are Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish) because of her ancestry, and Finnish. Her time travel choice would be a historical fiction story. Mrs. Sockman’s favorite book is Spies in The Promised Land by Jonah Kain, and she also likes anything by Francine Rivers. Her superpower might come in handy for her time travel.
Mrs. Stockman’s hidden skill or talent is that she is able to train deer to come to her house and eat corn oats and apples from a metal bowl. If it’s empty, they will wait for her. They don’t run away and they trust her enough for the moms to bring their kids over to eat as well.
Mrs. Sockman has been head seamstress for the recent three play productions for the Freddies. Her hobbies include sewing, quilting, crochet, and weaving. She also enjoys watching Indy Car Racing which is a series that includes American open- wheel car racing. Things she’s crocheted are squares, which she added together to make a blanket, made some bath towels, and made dolls for girls in Africa that didn’t have toys.
Mrs. Sockman’s best summer was when she took an Amtrak train from Toledo to San Diego, California, to stay with her sister for a week. She hopes to do this more often.
Before Mrs. Sockman started teaching, she worked as a project engineer for Kokosing, and realized she liked teaching and leading youth in what they were doing.
Mrs. Sockman enjoys being a teacher because she loves when she can get her students to make a connection that was not there before.
In high school Mrs. Sockman participated in volleyball, basketball, softball, and the swim team. Volleyball was her favorite and the swim team was least.
Mrs. Sockman graduated from the University of Akron and Mount Vernon Nazarene University. She also attended Ohio University, University of Akron, University of Phoenix, and Cuyahoga Community College. This summer she will be attending Columbus State University and Umass Global for Abstract Algebra.
A piece of advice she would give to students and teachers is at the end of the day, reflect. Extend grace for things that you didn’t do well and try again tomorrow. Celebrate the things that you did well and repeat.
