Many people do not know how great of a coach we have with our very own Athletic Director at Fredericktown–Tim Doup. Mr. Doup started coaching in 1993, coaching for a total of thirty years for just football, but he also had some coaching years in track and field.
Doup started out at a Division 1 high school being an assistant coach for Olentangy for 3 years, then proceeded to Upper Arlington High school where he coached for another 7 years. In that seven year span at this Division 1 school, Mr. Doup helped accomplish one of the hardest achievements for a football program, winning a Division 1 State Title in 2000. This is a rare occurrence for a coach, as only a small fraction of coaches to get that level of experience and excitement.
After 10 years of coaching for football, Coach Doup went on to be a assistant coach for 10 years at Otterbein University and 10 years as the head coach, putting forth 20 years of his life dedicated to the program and players.
Doup commented on the recruiting process for college football. “Recruiting is much longer hours than even the actual football season itself.” He explained the long hours of frustration–going 7 days a week during the football season and recruiting in the off season.
Mr. Doup stated that the biggest difference between coaching high schoolers and college kids is the mentality, work ethic, and the way coaches can talk to the kids. In high school, kids on the team may play three sports and just are getting through football to the next sport compared to college when other recruits are coming in, maybe taking a current players spot.
Coach Doup stated that he could see how much harder some college kids worked. They were all in for that one sport that they came to the college for, so he could talk to them differently, stating facts about what they need to do to keep their spot before it gets taken away by a new recruit.
We are proud at FLS to say we have a fascinating and awesome Athletic Director/ ex-coach in our programs today.
