Students in Mrs. Shriver’s, Mrs. Webb’s, as well as Mrs. Smith’s classes had the opportunity to attend OSU Mansfield for a day-long STEAM focused field trip to explore different classes on campus.
During the technology portion, one group of students “played with robots”. With the help of instructors, the robots were programmed to pick up and drop different heart-shaped objects in honor of Valentine’s Day. A different machine was programmed by students to build tokens engraved with “FHS”.
The other group experimented with Artificial Intelligence (AI). They collaborated with one another to create fun songs and images using key words they typed into computers.
Some met a professor of anthropology. They were encouraged to “engage” with the lettuce and grapes on the tray so they could visualize how mammals chew their food.
Meanwhile, other students were solving murders in the Forensics Lab. That professor taught students how to extract DNA from a strawberry, match up footprints, match hair strands, and SO much more.
Some students performed Romeo and Juliet on the theater stage. Each individual was instructed to choose their role: a director, light or sound crew, or an actor. Each team worked together in order to write a short skit to perform in front of each other.
Using light sensitive paper, the other group of Freddies designed their own works of art. When the paper was exposed to light, it would turn blue. So, they placed objects of their choice on their papers to leave imprints and create designs.
