Mary Pound, middle school history teacher, has been teaching for 6 years.
Mary Pound became a teacher because she has a passion for learning and watching others learn. She knew that she wanted to be a teacher since elementary school because her mom is an English teacher.
Some of her hobbies are reading. Her favorite kinds of books are along the lines of The Hunger Games, Maze Runner, and Divergent. Her family plants soy beans.
Pound did not play any sports in school. She tried all of them but wasn’t the best, so she stayed with the marching band through high school.
All of her siblings were multiple sport athletes and her mom coached. Because of their dedication to school and club sports, Pound learned a lot growing up.
Pound was involved in “Younglife”, during high school and college. This organization places college students as volunteers into mentorship roles with middle school, high school, and college students. It builds community and provides a safe space outside their household where they can have fun and experience life with people who have similar interests.
One of Pounds favorite memories from “Young life” comes from when she was in college. She and the kids spent a spring break at a YoungLife camp in Florida called Southwind. These camps always include a lot of activities and group games. One night they were taken to a giant mud pit where they all played flag football. They also had a water balloon fight but the balloons were full of paint. At the end of their camp time a car was brought in. They were all given a turn with bats, golf clubs and spray paint. To destroy the car. At the very end, the Ohio State group was able to flip the car over. It was super fun and a lot of memes were created.
One of Pound’s favorite memories from teaching is when she had her students recreate the Boston Tea Party trials. Davidson was the judge and Charley Beheler and Isabelle Short did not break character the entire morning.
Mary Pound’s summer mostly consists of being at camp because she is a camp nurse and loves it. She is in charge of band-aids and general first aid things, as well as giving out medication to campers who need it beyond their morning dose. Pound monitors campers with diabetes and any other medical condition. She also administers EPIPENS and stabilizes injuries to prepare for emergency medical services before the squad gets to camp. The Licking County Family YMCA Day Camp is 10 weeks long. However, the kids do NOT stay the night.
Pound attended college at Ohio University. If her teaching career did not work out, she would be at the Ohio Department of Agriculture studying meteorology and hydrology.
Pound only needs to hear directions once to get to a destination. If she could have any superpower, it would be to change her food to fit her mood so she does not have to spend more money.
A piece of advice that Mary Pound would give to teachers for students is this: “Nobody is an expert on classroom management. The kids change every year and so will you. Go with the flow and do what works.”
Pound could time travel, she would choose to live with the Aztecs while they were building Tenochtitlan. They created a city that floated in the middle of a lake. The floating gardens were called chinampas and sustained their kingdom. She would like to know how they did it and where they got the idea.
One person that Pound would like to meet up with from the past would be William Henry Harrison for two reasons. The first one is to ask him why he chose not to wear a hat during his Inaugural Address, which led him to get pneumonia and die. The second is to see how he felt after winning the Battle of Lake Erie but losing the presidency to Andrew Jackson, who won the Battle of New Orleans. Harrison just kind of let Jackson do his thing and sat in the background for a hot minute. Pound wants to know why he didn’t campaign on his own as a war hero. This sounds like something a history teacher would want to know.
